The Two Divine Modes of Parbrahm’s Lila: Pravritti and Nivritti

The Two Divine Modes of Parbrahm's Lila: Pravritti and Nivritti ✨

Parbrahm is the very embodiment of divine bliss (rasa); therefore, He does not remain in isolation. What meaning is there in bliss that is solitary? By nature, He is the infinite source of love and bliss. His lila (divine play) has two distinct modes:

  1. Pravritti Lila — manifest through Akshar Brahm
  2. Nivritti Lila — manifest through Aksharatit Parbrahm, immersed in pure love-bliss

Though Parbrahm is one and indivisible, due to the distinction in His divine play, He appears in two forms — one as majestic and sovereign (Pravritti), and the other as intimate and love-filled (Nivritti).

There may be two forms for the sake of the lila, but the essence (svarup) remains one.

"It aur na dooja koye,Swaroop ek hai, lila doye."

(Parikrama 3/98)

🔹 Pravritti Lila: The Expansion of Creation and Divine Sovereignty

In this lila, Akshar Brahm, in collaboration with prakriti (primordial nature), brings about creation — manifesting the cosmic form in countless shapes, levels, and dimensions. In this process:

  • The experience of bliss is relative — sometimes more, sometimes less, depending on one's refinement (taratamya)
  • In the three upper nectar realms of Akshar Brahm (Sat, Kaival, and Sablik), glimpses of Aksharatit's bliss are reflected in varying degrees
  • In the fourth realm (Avyākrit), where the world of illusion (maya) begins, knowledge and bliss become veiled, and a sorrow-filled universe emerges

In this mode, the lila becomes fluid — there is no dense, concentrated bliss of love, only its reflection.

🔹 Nivritti Lila: The Perfect Culmination of Love-Bliss

This is the transcendental lila of Aksharatit Parbrahm — beyond maya, fully saturated in love and bliss. Here, He does not create anything. Instead, He remains absorbed in divine love with the eternal souls (paratmas).

  • Here there is no division, no doership
  • Parbrahm is love personified; the paratmas remain immersed in His youthful (kishor) lila
  • Akshar and paratmas are mere reflections of His love
    • In Parbrahm, that love is densely embodied
    • In paratmas, that love flows in varying degrees, fluid and melting

🎭 Symbolism of Lila: The Forms of Child and Youth

After experiencing the world, a soul becomes aware of the two aspects of the Lord's lila:

  1. Child Lila — creative, governed by Akshar Brahm
  2. Youth Lila — filled with wisdom and love, of Aksharatit Parbrahm

Old age signifies decline and decay — there is no lila in it.

Thus, the Supreme is called 'ever-young', ever full of vitality, radiance, strength, and joy.

🧠 Knowledge and Love — Not Opposites, But Complementary Expressions

When Parbrahm is absorbed in meditation, He manifests as the embodiment of knowledge — fully aware of all aspects of the lila.

When He is immersed in divine love with the paratmas, He manifests as the embodiment of rasa (bliss).

Knowledge and bliss are not in opposition:

  • When bliss rises, knowledge turns inward
  • When knowledge awakens, bliss recedes into the background

Thus, the non-dual Parbrahm manifests in both forms within His lila.

🌸 Where is the experience of Brahmananda (Divine Bliss) found?

  • This world is but a dream of Akshar Brahm — here, only names and forms exist, not dense, living rasa
  • Just as one cannot taste fruit by its shadow, true and lasting love-bliss cannot be experienced here
  • The full experience of that divine love-bliss can only be had in Paramdham, where the King of Rasa — Parbrahm — remains absorbed in His eternal, perfect lila of love

🔱 Conclusion:

  • Parbrahm's lila has two aspects: In one, He creates the universe (Pravritti). In the other, He remains immersed in supreme love (Nivritti)
  • Parbrahm is nondual and unique, yet manifests in multiple forms through His play with Akshar and the paratmas
  • Only the paratmas can truly taste His perfect bliss —Just as only the honeybee knows the true sweetness of nectar

With loving salutations 🙏

May you always remain in supreme joy and divine auspiciousness 💫
